The Late Jim Jones Photographer and Historian
Dinnages, the family team purchased the remains of a previously vast library of negatives and slides from Jim H Jones through his son Graham during the year 2000. Jim Jones worked for Southdown Motor Services and the Brighton & Hove Bus Company all his working life for 38 years until his untimely death in that year 2000. Jim was therefore a well known enthusiast and employee within the local bus industry. The vast majority of Brightons transport history was recorded by Jim H Jones and can be found on the Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Companies history section at www.Buses.co.uk
Of the B&W photographs we have, as yet none online are from Jim Jones although these are available in the Monthly Newsletter. The BW Series are therefore currently available while the colour, either negatives or slides will be offered to enthusiasts within his own series at a future date. Pity that when looking through the boxes and negative lists, many of the local Brighton based views had already been taken out, wether for loan or sold off we cannot tell but we have little that remains of Brighton in the B&W although enough of interest in colour slides and negatives including many interesting topograhical views that would not have been seen around before.
The suggestion and connection to have been able to purchase this original library and some emphemeria was Mike Cheesman, the Marketing Officer and great friend of Jim H Jones, and we felt privilaged to have been put forward for this. It is with some regret though that we were offered the copious other leaflets and papers that were at the time thought far too historical for us and suggested it was to be sold or given to a society. In hindsight this information was almost priceless and irreplaceable, and we let it go, which would have assisted greatly in cataloguing photographs at least. We have since learnt by this and always go for everything we can when offered collections with regard to local interest & particularly transport.
