DVD Steam Locomotives - Rail UK

Steam Locomotives - Railways UK

A steam locomotive is a locomotive powered by steam. Wood or coal is used to fuel the heat process and to boil the water in the tank (or boiler) above, which simply put is similar to how a kettle would create the steam. With various controls gives the pressure to drive pistons and turn wheels of the locomotive. This term of steam locomotive usually refers to its use on railways, but can also refer to a road based locomotive such as a traction engine or steamroller.

Steam locomotives dominated railroad usage from the start of the 19th century, until the end of the 20th Century. From the world's first ever railway journey in Wales Great Britain in 1804, Steam locomotives were gradually improved and developed in their over 150 years of development and use. From about 1930 other types of engines were developed and steam locomotives were gradually superseded by diesel and electric locomotives provided in another catagory.

Before the 1923 Grouping, overall the UK status was mixed. The bigger railway companies built locomotives in their own workshops but smaller ones also industrial concerns ordered them from third party builders. A large market for these builders was abroad because of the home build policy exercised by the main railway companies.

Between 1923 and 1947, the main Big Four railway companies, being The Great Western Railway, The London, Midland and Scottish , The London and North Eastern and the Southern Railway all built most of their own locomotives. Generally speaking, they only bought locomotives from other builders when their own works were fully occupied or when government-mandated standardisation during wartime.

From 1948, British Railways allowed the former Four companies latterly designated Regions, to continue to build their own designs, but also created a range of standard locomotives which supposedly combined the best features from each region. Although a policy of dieselisation was adopted in 1955, British Rail continued to build new steam locomotives until as late as 1960, the last being called Evening Star.
