The branch line to Bulford was authorised under a Light Railway Order in 1903 opening to passengers in 1906. The line originally was to run from Grateley across the Salisbury Plain to Shrewton via Newton Tony and Amesbury. The section between Grateley and Amesbury opened in 1902, the line to Shrewton never actually opened. Passenger service was withdrawn in 1952 with the line remaining open for goods service and troup trains until finally closing in 1963.

"Well worth a read, and not just by railway buffs"
